Domestic Abuse Is A Crime!
Domestic
abuse is any violent or abusive behaviour towards you by a person
known to you. This is usually from a partner or ex-partner or even
a close family member. Domestic abuse can take many forms. It is
physical violence, which can include punching, kicking and beating
or sexual violence or forcing you to do something against your will.
Domestic abuse is also emotional or mental abuse, telling you you
are worthless or constantly criticising you. It can also take the
form of threatening children, intimidation, bullying, controlling
your every move or even isolating you from your family or friends.
It could also end in death! 1 in 3 women, 1 in 6 men and 1 in 4
people in a lesbian, gay or bisexual relationship will experience
domestic abuse at least once in their lifetime. Because people feel
that it is something to be ashamed of domestic abuse is still vastly
under reported.
Nobody has the right to abuse you physically,
sexually or emotionally. If this is happening to you, you are not
alone. You may feel ashamed, isolated, humiliated or confused. You
are not to blame, do not suffer in silence, as there are people
who can help.
Torbay's Domestic Abuse Forum have launched
domestic abuse awareness raising campaigns to highlight 'Domestic
Abuse Is A Crime!' and encourage those suffering domestic abuse
to report incidents either to the police or other agencies in Torbay
who can help. (Research suggests that women will be assaulted 35
times before they contact the police). Safer Communities have supported
the Forum by funding advertising on buses, car park tickets, bus
tickets and by holding events throughout Torbay to raise awareness
of domestic abuse.
If you would like to receive posters
to raise awareness of this campaign or for further information,
please contact our Domestic Abuse Prevention Officer, Jo Penhaligon,
