Wake Up To Hep C!
Safer
Communities Torbay become involved in European Hepatitis C Awareness
Day (1st October 2005) with our own awareness raising campaign during
October.
You may have noticed our A-Frame Trailer
being moved around the bay with the message Wake Up To Hep
C!. Campaign materials were also distributed to services working
with drug users as anyone sharing drug-taking equipment is particularly
at risk of contracting the virus. It is also important to highlight
that Hep C can be passed on by unsterile tattooing/body piercing
equipment.
The problem is that the Hep C virus may
be dormant in the human body for many years, so many people dont
know they are infected and can pass it on without knowing. At least
200,000 people have been infected with Hep C in England and it is
the leading cause of liver cancer and cirrhosis. Hep C can be treated
quite effectively but there is currently no vaccination or cure.
